Terms of Service for Receipts for YNAB

Welcome to Receipts for YNAB. These Terms of Service (“Terms”, “Agreement”) are a legal agreement between you (“User”, “you”, or “your”) and eTurea (“we”, “us”, or “our”) governing your use of the Receipts for YNAB mobile application (the “App”, “Service”).

By downloading, installing, or using Receipts for YNAB, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the App.

1. Acceptance of Terms

1.1 Agreement to Terms

By accessing or using Receipts for YNAB, you confirm that:

  • You are at least 13 years of age
  • You have the legal capacity to enter into this Agreement
  • You have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms
  • You agree to comply with all applicable laws and regulations

1.2 Additional Terms

Your use of the App is also subject to:

  • Apple’s App Store Terms of Service
  • YNAB’s Terms of Service (https://www.ynab.com/terms)
  • Our Privacy Policy (available in the App or at privacy.md)

1.3 Modifications to Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. When we make material changes:

  • We will update the “Last Updated” date at the top of these Terms
  • We may notify you through the App or via email
  • Your continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the modified Terms
  • If you do not agree to the modified Terms, you must stop using the App

2. Description of Service

2.1 What Receipts for YNAB Does

Receipts for YNAB is an iOS mobile application that provides the following features:

  • Receipt Scanning: Capture or import photos of paper receipts
  • Data Extraction: Use Apple Intelligence (on-device AI) to extract merchant names, dates, amounts, and line items from receipt images
  • Receipt Management: Store and organize scanned receipts on your device
  • YNAB Integration: Sync receipt data to your YNAB (You Need A Budget) account as transactions
  • Category Matching: Suggest appropriate YNAB plan categories for your purchases
  • Data Verification: Review and edit extracted information before saving

2.2 What Receipts for YNAB Does NOT Do

The App does not:

  • Store your data on external servers (all data is on your device)
  • Access your banking or financial accounts directly
  • Provide financial advice or budgeting recommendations
  • Guarantee 100% accuracy of extracted receipt data
  • Modify or delete YNAB transactions created by other apps or sources

2.3 Requirements

To use Receipts for YNAB, you must have:

  • An iPhone running iOS 26.0 or later
  • For AI scanning: A device with Apple Intelligence capabilities (A17 Pro chip or later, e.g., iPhone 15 Pro+)
  • For manual entry: Any iOS 26+ device (AI not required)
  • A valid, active YNAB account (subscription required by YNAB)
  • An internet connection for YNAB synchronization
  • Permission to access your device’s camera and photo library

3. User Accounts and Authentication

3.1 YNAB Account Required

Receipts for YNAB requires authentication with a valid YNAB account. You are responsible for:

  • Maintaining an active YNAB subscription
  • Keeping your YNAB credentials secure
  • All activity that occurs under your YNAB account when using this App
  • Complying with YNAB’s Terms of Service

3.2 OAuth2 Authentication

The App uses OAuth2 to connect to your YNAB account:

  • We never see or store your YNAB password
  • Access tokens are stored securely in your device’s iOS Keychain
  • You can revoke access at any time through the App settings or YNAB’s website

3.3 Account Security

You agree to:

  • Protect your device with a passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID
  • Not share your device with unauthorized users while logged into the App
  • Notify us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access to your YNAB account through the App
  • Log out of the App on shared or public devices

4. Acceptable Use Policy

4.1 Permitted Uses

You may use Receipts for YNAB only for:

  • Personal, non-commercial receipt management
  • Creating legitimate transactions in your own YNAB plan
  • Scanning receipts for purchases you actually made
  • Managing your personal financial records

4.2 Prohibited Uses

You agree NOT to:

  • Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or attempt to derive the source code of the App
  • Modify, adapt, translate, or create derivative works of the App
  • Remove, obscure, or alter any copyright, trademark, or proprietary rights notices
  • Use any automated systems (bots, scrapers, etc.) to access the App
  • Attempt to bypass or circumvent any security measures or access controls

Misuse:

  • Use the App for any illegal, fraudulent, or unauthorized purpose
  • Create fake or fraudulent receipts or transactions
  • Scan receipts that do not belong to you without permission
  • Use the App to manipulate or falsify your YNAB plan data
  • Share, sell, or distribute your access to the App

YNAB API Abuse:

  • Make excessive API requests that could burden YNAB’s servers
  • Attempt to access other users’ YNAB data
  • Interfere with or disrupt YNAB’s services
  • Violate YNAB’s API Terms of Service or rate limits

System Interference:

  • Transmit viruses, malware, or harmful code through the App
  • Interfere with or disrupt the App’s operation or servers (if any are added)
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any systems or networks
  • Overload or stress-test the App’s infrastructure

4.3 Enforcement

We reserve the right to:

  • Investigate suspected violations of these Terms
  • Cooperate with law enforcement authorities
  • Take appropriate legal action against violators
  • Terminate or suspend your access to the App without notice for violations

5. User Content and Data

5.1 Your Content

You retain all ownership rights to content you create or upload to the App, including:

  • Receipt images you capture or import
  • Edited transaction details
  • Notes or annotations you add

5.2 License to Your Content

By using the App, you grant us a limited license to:

  • Process your receipt images using on-device AI
  • Store your data locally on your device
  • Transmit transaction data to YNAB when you explicitly choose to sync

Important: This license is limited to providing the Service and does not grant us ownership or commercial rights to your content.

5.3 Content Responsibility

You are solely responsible for:

  • The accuracy of data you enter or sync to YNAB
  • Ensuring you have the right to scan and process receipts
  • Compliance with your employer’s policies if scanning work-related receipts
  • Compliance with applicable tax and record-keeping laws

5.4 Prohibited Content

You may not use the App to scan or process:

  • Receipts containing illegal purchases
  • Documents that are not receipts (e.g., personal documents, IDs, passwords)
  • Copyrighted material without authorization
  • Receipts that contain other people’s payment card information without consent

6. Intellectual Property Rights

6.1 App Ownership

Receipts for YNAB and all associated intellectual property rights are owned by eTurea, including:

  • The App’s source code, design, and user interface
  • The App’s name, logo, and branding
  • Documentation and instructional materials
  • Algorithms and processes used in the App

6.2 License Grant

Subject to your compliance with these Terms, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable license to:

  • Download and install the App on Apple devices you own or control
  • Use the App for personal, non-commercial purposes
  • Access features made available to you through the App

6.3 License Restrictions

This license does NOT permit you to:

  • Use the App on devices you do not own or control (except family sharing as permitted by Apple)
  • Transfer, sell, rent, lease, or lend the App to third parties
  • Use the App for commercial purposes or on behalf of third parties
  • Publicly display or perform the App

6.4 Third-Party Components

The App may include third-party software or frameworks subject to separate licenses:

  • Apple’s iOS frameworks and SDKs
  • Swift and SwiftUI frameworks
  • Any open-source components (listed in the App’s About section)

6.5 Trademarks

“Receipts for YNAB” and associated logos are trademarks of eTurea. “YNAB” and “You Need A Budget” are trademarks of Steine LLC (YNAB). Use of these trademarks without permission is prohibited.

7. Third-Party Services

7.1 YNAB Integration

The App integrates with YNAB’s API to sync transactions. You acknowledge that:

  • YNAB is a separate service operated by Steine LLC
  • YNAB’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy apply to your YNAB account
  • We are not responsible for YNAB’s service availability, downtime, or changes to their API
  • YNAB may charge subscription fees for their service
  • We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by YNAB

7.2 Apple Services

The App uses Apple’s services and frameworks:

  • Apple Intelligence / Foundation Models (on-device AI)
  • Vision framework (on-device OCR)
  • iOS Keychain (credential storage)
  • Siri and Shortcuts (optional integrations)

Apple’s terms and policies apply to these services.

7.3 Third-Party Service Changes

We reserve the right to:

  • Modify or discontinue third-party integrations at any time
  • Add new third-party services with notice
  • Remove features dependent on third-party APIs if those APIs become unavailable

8. Fees and Payment

8.1 Free App

Receipts for YNAB is currently provided free of charge. You are not required to pay any fees to download or use the App.

8.2 YNAB Subscription

While Receipts for YNAB is free, you must maintain an active YNAB subscription (paid separately to YNAB) to sync receipt data. We are not responsible for YNAB’s subscription fees or billing policies.

8.3 Future Pricing

We reserve the right to:

  • Introduce paid features or subscriptions in the future
  • Provide advance notice of any pricing changes
  • Continue offering basic features for free (if we introduce paid tiers)
  • Grandfather existing users under different pricing terms

8.4 Refunds

Since the App is currently free, no refunds are applicable. If paid features are introduced:

  • Refunds will be handled according to Apple’s App Store refund policy
  • We do not control or process App Store payments

9. Data Accuracy and Disclaimer

9.1 AI Extraction Accuracy

The App uses Apple Intelligence to extract data from receipts. You acknowledge that:

  • AI-extracted data may contain errors and should always be verified
  • Accuracy depends on receipt quality, formatting, and legibility
  • We do not guarantee 100% accuracy of extracted merchant names, dates, amounts, or items
  • You are responsible for reviewing and correcting data before syncing to YNAB

9.2 Receipt Quality

Receipt scanning quality depends on:

  • Photo lighting and clarity
  • Receipt condition (faded ink, wrinkled paper, etc.)
  • Device camera quality
  • Apple Intelligence model performance

We provide confidence scores to help you assess data quality, but you remain responsible for verifying all data.

9.3 YNAB Sync Limitations

Due to YNAB API limitations:

  • Transaction dates cannot be changed after syncing (YNAB API restriction)
  • Subtransactions (line items) cannot be edited after syncing (YNAB API restriction)
  • You may need to delete and re-scan receipts to correct certain errors
  • Some YNAB features may not be available through the App

9.4 Financial Decisions

Receipts for YNAB is not financial advice. The App:

  • Does not provide budgeting recommendations
  • Does not analyze your spending patterns
  • Does not offer tax preparation services
  • Should not be solely relied upon for financial record-keeping

You are responsible for maintaining accurate financial records and consulting qualified professionals for financial advice.

10. Disclaimer of Warranties

10.1 “AS IS” Basis

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, YNAB RECEIPTS IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Merchantability: Fitness for a particular purpose
  • Non-infringement: That the App does not violate third-party rights
  • Accuracy: That data extraction is error-free
  • Reliability: That the App will function without interruption
  • Security: That the App is completely secure from all threats
  • Compatibility: That the App works with all devices or iOS versions

10.2 No Guarantee of Service

We do not guarantee that:

  • The App will be available at all times or in all locations
  • The App will be free from bugs, errors, or defects
  • Defects will be corrected in any particular timeframe
  • The App will meet your specific requirements
  • Data will never be lost or corrupted (always maintain backups)

10.3 Third-Party Service Availability

We are not responsible for:

  • YNAB API downtime or service interruptions
  • Apple Intelligence model changes or unavailability
  • iOS updates that affect App functionality
  • Changes to Apple’s frameworks or policies

10.4 Use at Your Own Risk

You expressly agree that use of the App is at your sole risk. You are responsible for:

  • Verifying all extracted data before syncing
  • Maintaining backups of important receipts
  • Ensuring compliance with your tax and record-keeping obligations
  • Protecting your device and data

11. Limitation of Liability

11.1 Exclusion of Damages

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL ETUREA, ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, OR AGENTS BE LIABLE FOR:

Indirect Damages:

  • Lost profits or revenue
  • Loss of business opportunities
  • Loss of data or information
  • Cost of substitute services
  • Damage to reputation

Consequential Damages:

  • Resulting from use or inability to use the App
  • Resulting from unauthorized access to your data
  • Resulting from errors in extracted receipt data
  • Resulting from YNAB API issues or downtime

Special, Incidental, or Punitive Damages:

  • Whether based on warranty, contract, tort, negligence, strict liability, or any other legal theory
  • Even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages

11.2 Maximum Liability Cap

If, notwithstanding the above, we are found liable for any damages, our total liability shall not exceed the greater of:

  • The amount you paid us in the 12 months prior to the event giving rise to liability, OR
  • $50 USD

11.3 Basis of the Bargain

You acknowledge that we have offered the App at no charge (currently) and set our prices (if any) in reliance on these liability limitations, which allocate risk and form an essential basis of the bargain between us.

11.4 Jurisdictional Limitations

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations may not apply to you. In such cases, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.

12. Indemnification

12.1 Your Indemnification Obligation

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless eTurea, its officers, directors, employees, agents, and affiliates from and against any and all claims, damages, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising from or relating to:

  • Your use or misuse of the App
  • Your violation of these Terms
  • Your violation of any third-party rights, including YNAB’s Terms of Service
  • Your violation of applicable laws or regulations
  • Content you submit, scan, or sync through the App
  • Inaccurate data you sync to YNAB
  • Unauthorized use of your device or YNAB account

12.2 Defense and Settlement

We reserve the right, at our own expense, to assume the exclusive defense and control of any matter subject to indemnification by you. You agree to cooperate with our defense of such claims.

13. Termination

13.1 Termination by You

You may stop using the App at any time by:

  • Deleting the App from your device
  • Disconnecting your YNAB account in Settings
  • Ceasing all use of the Service

13.2 Termination by Us

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your access to the App, without notice, if:

  • You violate these Terms or our Acceptable Use Policy
  • You engage in fraudulent or illegal activity
  • Your use poses security or legal risks
  • Required by law or court order
  • We discontinue the App entirely

13.3 Effect of Termination

Upon termination:

  • Your license to use the App immediately ends
  • You must delete the App from all devices
  • Disclaimers, limitations of liability, and indemnification obligations survive termination
  • Your locally stored data remains on your device (unless you delete it)
  • We are not obligated to retain or return any of your data

13.4 No Refunds Upon Termination

If we introduce paid features in the future, termination for cause (your violation of Terms) does not entitle you to any refund.

14. Apple-Specific Terms

14.1 Acknowledgment

You acknowledge that:

  • These Terms are between you and eTurea, not Apple
  • Apple has no obligation to provide support for the App
  • Apple is not responsible for the App or its content
  • You will comply with Apple’s App Store Terms of Service

14.2 Scope of License

The license granted to you is limited to a non-transferable license to use the App on Apple-branded products you own or control, as permitted by Apple’s App Store Usage Rules.

14.3 Maintenance and Support

eTurea, not Apple, is solely responsible for providing maintenance and support for the App as specified in these Terms (or as required by law).

14.4 Warranty

eTurea, not Apple, is responsible for any product warranties to the extent not disclaimed in these Terms.

14.5 Product Claims

eTurea, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claims relating to the App, including:

  • Product liability claims
  • Claims that the App fails to conform to legal or regulatory requirements
  • Claims arising under consumer protection or similar laws

14.6 Intellectual Property Claims

In the event of a third-party claim that the App infringes intellectual property rights, eTurea, not Apple, is responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement, and discharge of such claims.

14.7 Third-Party Beneficiary

Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms. Upon your acceptance of these Terms, Apple has the right (and is deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce these Terms against you as a third-party beneficiary.

15. Dispute Resolution

15.1 Informal Resolution

Before filing a claim, you agree to try to resolve the dispute informally by contacting us at receiptsforynab.app@gmail.com. We will attempt to resolve the dispute informally within 60 days.

15.2 Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict of law principles.

15.3 Jurisdiction and Venue

You agree that any legal action or proceeding arising out of or relating to these Terms or the App shall be brought exclusively in the federal or state courts located in California, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of such courts.

15.4 Arbitration (Optional Future Provision)

We reserve the right to require binding arbitration for future disputes, with notice. Currently, disputes are resolved in court as described above.

15.5 Class Action Waiver

YOU AGREE THAT DISPUTES WILL BE RESOLVED INDIVIDUALLY, NOT AS PART OF A CLASS ACTION OR REPRESENTATIVE PROCEEDING. You waive any right to participate in class-action lawsuits or class-wide arbitration.

15.6 Exceptions

The following disputes are NOT subject to informal resolution or arbitration:

  • Claims to enforce or protect intellectual property rights
  • Small claims court actions (if they meet court requirements)
  • Requests for injunctive or equitable relief

16. General Provisions

16.1 Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and eTurea regarding the App and supersede all prior agreements and understandings.

16.2 Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect. The invalid provision will be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it valid and enforceable.

16.3 Waiver

Our failure to enforce any right or provision in these Terms does not constitute a waiver of that right or provision. Any waiver must be in writing and signed by us.

16.4 Assignment

You may not assign or transfer these Terms or your rights under these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign these Terms without restriction (e.g., in connection with a merger or acquisition).

16.5 No Agency Relationship

No agency, partnership, joint venture, or employment relationship is created between you and eTurea as a result of these Terms or your use of the App.

16.6 Force Majeure

We are not liable for any failure or delay in performance due to circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including:

  • Natural disasters
  • War or terrorism
  • Government actions or regulations
  • Internet or telecommunications failures
  • Third-party API outages (e.g., YNAB)
  • Apple platform changes

16.7 Survival

The following sections survive termination of these Terms:

  • Intellectual Property Rights
  • Disclaimer of Warranties
  • Limitation of Liability
  • Indemnification
  • Dispute Resolution
  • General Provisions

16.8 Language

These Terms are written in English. Any translations are provided for convenience only. In the event of conflict, the English version prevails.

16.9 Headings

Section headings are for convenience only and do not affect the interpretation of these Terms.

17. Updates and Modifications

17.1 App Updates

We may release updates to the App from time to time, including:

  • Bug fixes and performance improvements
  • New features and functionality
  • Security patches
  • Compatibility updates for new iOS versions

You are encouraged to keep the App updated to the latest version for security and functionality reasons.

17.2 Feature Changes

We reserve the right to:

  • Add, modify, or remove features at any time
  • Change how the App works or looks
  • Discontinue the App entirely with notice

17.3 Notification of Material Changes

For material changes to these Terms:

  • We will update the “Last Updated” date
  • We may display an in-app notice
  • We may send an email notification (if we have your email)
  • Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance

18. Privacy and Data Protection

18.1 Privacy Policy

Your use of the App is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated into these Terms by reference. Please review our Privacy Policy to understand how we collect, use, and protect your information.

18.2 Data Processing

As described in our Privacy Policy:

  • All receipt processing occurs on-device using Apple Intelligence
  • We do not operate servers that collect your data
  • YNAB sync occurs directly between your device and YNAB’s servers
  • Your OAuth tokens are stored securely in iOS Keychain

18.3 Your Responsibilities

You are responsible for:

  • Ensuring your device is secure and up-to-date
  • Not sharing your device access with unauthorized users
  • Complying with applicable data protection laws when scanning receipts
  • Obtaining necessary consents if scanning receipts containing others’ information

19. Accessibility

We strive to make Receipts for YNAB accessible to users with disabilities. If you encounter accessibility issues, please contact us at receiptsforynab.app@gmail.com, and we will make reasonable efforts to address them.

20. Export Control

You may not use or export the App except as authorized by United States law and the laws of the jurisdiction where you obtained the App. You represent and warrant that:

  • You are not located in a country subject to U.S. government embargo
  • You are not listed on any U.S. government list of prohibited or restricted parties
  • You will comply with all applicable export and re-export control laws

22. Acknowledgment

If you do not agree to these Terms, you must not use the App.
